Website Statistics Explanation

As of 2002, The Wire began implimenting a graphical, web based website statistics software called AWStats which displays visiter information off a URL at your website. All new websites include this package. We are updating our servers and will notify existing clients by email when your server is upgraded.

What follows is a summary explanation of the weekly stats email The Wire sends from servers not using AWStats. Additional technical documentation is available from Analog.

The most important measurement of your site performance is the requests for pages (also known as "page views") and distinct hosts served (also known as "unique users").

Please note that website statistics help you evaluate your site performance and provide benchmarks for measuring changes over time. Website statistics cannot tell you "who" visited or "exactly how many people" visited. Visits are not recorded when networks or ISPs cache or store pages on their servers to reduce traffic and congestion.

General Summary:
Successful requests: all pages, directories and files served.
Successful requests for pages: a useful indicator of how many of your pages were viewed. Also known as "page views".
Failed requests: broken links or images, wrongly typed URLs or server down.
Distinct hosts served: computers or IP addresses - also refers to proxies (eg. office networks, AOL etc).
Data Transferred: weekly traffic in bytes (divide by 1000 to get megabytes).

Weekly Report: pages successfully served each week.
Daily Report: page requests each day.
Daily Summary: which day of the week is busiest.
Hourly Summary: which time of day requests occur.
Domain Report: shows country specific viewers when a domain is country specific (eg. .CA). Most domains are .com.
Directory Report: which subdirectories serve the most data.
File Type Report: file types (like .html, .gif, .jpg, etc) responsible for most data transfers.
File Size Report: sizes of the most frequently accessed files.
Request Report: most requested pages. Your home page is /.
Status Code Report: lists the number of server codes generated.
Request Report: this report lists which files were downloaded.
