We use the name Fred Smith and the email address fred@the-wire.com and fred@yourdomain.com as an example. Please substitute YOUR name and email address! There are only 3-4 pieces of information to add. Please accept all default settings, except where noted.

  1. Click on TOOLS, click on OPTIONS. Scroll up the Category section on the left until you reach the picture for GETTING STARTED. Click on it.
Every time you click on a Category icon, the settings for that Category will be displayed on the right.

    Eudora Options

  2. Here are the settings.
    POP Account: fred
    Real name: Fred Smith
    Return address: fred@the-wire.com
If you have a domain, put in fred@yourdomain.com.

    Eudora Options

  3. Click on the icon for Sending Mail. Under SMTP server type in: mail.the-wire.com
  4. Make sure the "Secure Sockets when Sending" is set to "Never"
(Defaults: leave all boxes checked unless you wish to queue mail so that you can write multiple emails offline and send at once when online. To queue mail simply uncheck the first two boxes, Immediate Send and Send on Check.)

    Eudora Options

  5. You are done! Click on the OK button and then connect to the-Wire and check your mail. For testing purposes, create a new message and address it to yourself. Send it, wait a few seconds, and then check for mail.

Netscape Communicator

  1. Click on the EDIT menu, click PREFERENCES.
  2. If you do not have a domain email address, fill in the following, using Freda Smith as the example.
    Name: Freda Smith
    Organization: [leave it empty]
    E-mail address: freda@the-wire.com
    Reply address: [leave it empty]
  3. If you do have a domain email address:
    Name: Fred Smith
    Organization: Somebusiness Inc.
    E-mail address: fred@yourdomain.com
    Reply address: fred@yourdomain.com
  4. Click once on Mail Servers. If the window under the INCOMING MAIL SERVERS heading (at the top/middle) is empty, click on the ADD button at the right and fill out the Mail Server Properties window.
    Server Name: mail.the-wire.com
    Server Type: POP3 Server
User Name: freda (i.e your email accounts at the-Wire)
(You can click Save Password if you want. Please leave the Check for mail every __ minutes box blank. The system disconnects you after 15 minutes of inactivity, and checking for mail every 1 - 14 miutes keeps the line open forever and may result in extra use charges!)
  5. If the window under the INCOMING MAIL SERVERS heading (at the top/middle) is NOT empty, then click once on the line at the top/middle just under the INCOMING MAIL SERVERS heading, and then click on the EDIT button at the right. (Ignore the path under the Local Mail Directory line. This path may differ with every computer.) You can then fill in the information in 4 above.
