Windows 95 and 98 Dialup Settings

Creating the Dial-Up Networking Icon

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.
  3. Double click on Make New Connection.
  4. When Windows 95/98 asks you to "Type the name of the computer you are dialing" enter "the-Wire". You can use capitals and spaces in the name. Where it says "Select a device" you can accept the default modem that appears.

  5. Click on the NEXT button.
  6. Leave the Area Code box empty.
  7. Put the entire phone number into the Telephone Number box.
    If you have Bell Call Waiting use the number: *70, 4162146452 to disable call waiting for the duration of your Internet session.
    If you do not have Bell Call Waiting use the number: 4162146452

    Make new connection

  8. Change the country code to CANADA (1).
  9. Click on the NEXT button.
    Click on the FINISH button.
    You have now created a new Icon called "the-Wire" which needs a little more configuration.

Configuring the Dial-Up Networking Icon

  1. With your RIGHT mouse button, click on the new icon called the-Wire in your Dialup Networking folder and choose Properties from the menu.

  2. Click on the Server Types tab. First, verify that the TYPE OF DIAL-UP SERVER is set to "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98" or a variant that begins with PPP:. Then, in ADVANCED OPTIONS, uncheck all of the check boxes. In ALLOWED NETWORK PROTOCOLS, make sure that only TCP/IP is checked. Click "OK" to exit this window.

  3. You are now able to access the Internet! Double-click on "the-Wire" icon. Type in the User name and Password we gave you. Click in the "Save Password" box for ease of access. Click "CONNECT" and the modem will dial the-Wire.
